5 Of The Best Baking Hints And Tips

Autumn in Australia and New Zealand is the perfect time for baking desserts, so we’ve collected the season’s best tips to help you get the ball rolling in the kitchen!

1. Use Autumn spices and flavours

We love autumn! The days are still a little bit warm, while the nights hint winter is on its way. That’s why autumn has the best spices, they’re dark and alluring and warm up the body. Typically, autumn spices are nutty, slightly spicy and slightly sweet. They include sweet cinnamon, bittersweet nutmeg, aromatic ground ginger, pungent chai, mildly sweet allspice, star anise, smoky black cardamom, earthy coriander, fennel and spicy peppercorns. With that in mind why not try our Cinnamon Tea Cake Recipe?

2.  Be creative with chocolate chip cookies

Take Betty Crocker’s Milk Chocolate Chunk Cookies mix and add your favourite extras like nuts, white chocolate chips and dip in frosting! Or if you like a wholesome touch add some goji berries and oats. For those who like it gooey – bake for 1-2 minutes less than suggested and these cookies will just melt in your mouth!

If you’re a fan of cherries and pistachio nuts, you’ll love our Spumoni Chunk Cookies recipe.

3. Cakes need a cooling off period

Let cakes, brownies and muffins cool in their pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a rack. This is especially important for dessert recipes like our delicious Rainbow Brownie Ice Cream Cake because the brownie pieces wouldn’t solidify enough to crumble into the cold ice-cream.

4.  For the perfect chocolate cake …

Use cocoa powder instead of flour to dust the greased pan before pouring in the mixture. The more chocolate, the better! Try this fab tip with our simple

Black Forest Cake recipe.

5.  Follow the recipe but remember it’s not a blue print!

When it comes to measuring ingredients following the recipe is extremely important. However, when it comes to things like kneading, oven time and personal taste it can be up to you and dependent on what tools you are working with. It’s best to judge these things for yourself and keep an eye on the process as you go.
