Bouncing Back To School

The kids are going back to school, finally!

After a long, hot summer, it can be hard to get back to the books and so, of course, children may need some extra brain power. Food can have a major impact on how we function, so lunch and playtime snacks are an important contribution to the energy and essential nutrients required by primary school children. So what goes in the lunch box may just improve their ability to learn – and we’re all for that!

Here’s a few ideas for a balanced – and delicious - lunch box:

  • Wholegrain carbohydrates will release energy more slowly to keep them going for longer. Think rolls, wraps, sandwiches, pasta salad with vegetables or sushi.
  • A piece of fresh fruit, canned fruit in natural juice, veggie sticks and small salads are full of essential nutrients and are easy to eat in the playground.
  • Reduced fat yoghurt, grainy crackers, plain popcorn, wholemeal fruit muffins, boiled eggs or a can of tuna are all great snacks to fill them up (and keep energy up too).
  • Water- and plenty of it to keep hydration levels high! Children may also like plain milk or occasionally, fruit juice with no added sugar (125ml serve).

Nature Valley Oats and Honey  is a great option to add to the lunch box on those extra active days. One serve contributes 56% to the whole grain daily target, plus it is a source of dietary fibre too.

Remember - safety first! Freeze drinks and use an insulated bag to help keep food cold and fresh until lunchtime.

Sometimes it’s as simple as a nutritious meal to get the kids rearing to learn! A balanced diet, exercise and support all contribute to a child’s happiness and success in school. So remember our handy tips and let us know how you go. We’d love to hear your thoughts on our lunch box ideas and which one your kid loves the most!
