Go Loco in North Mexico

Planning a trip to Mexico? Here’s why you should definitely detour through North Mexico...

Fast facts:
- Juarez City in North Mexico is the home of the original burrito.
- Other top cities in this region include Los Cabos, Monterrey and Tijuana.
- North Mexico’s terrain is much like the Southwest U.S. desert, which is known for its gorgeous landscapes and nature preserves. If you love getting outdoors then this should definitely be on your travel plan.

Festivals:
- Feria del Durazno
This Peach Fair runs from 14th – 16th September in Sirutato, Sinaloa. It celebrates peaches in all forms, from preserves to baked goods, and all are available in abundance to be sampled at this fair. Highlights of the festival include regional dancing and a traditional verbena (town dance).

- Feria del Maíz
The Feria del Maíz is a corn fair held in early November in Tamaulipas. The festival for all corn lovers, you’ll find soups, stews, pozoles and a multitude of enchiladas and antojitos made with corn tortillas.

- Carnival of Guaymas
This is Mexico’s oldest festival, and has been running since 1888. In the run up to lent, Sonara is transformed into a carnival that includes “Quema del malhumor”, the burning of an effigy, fireworks, piñatas, artistic performances, regional food, cultural shows, parades and the crowning of the queen.

Food:
When Europeans arrived in North Mexico, they found that much of land in this area was suitable for raising goats, sheep and cattle. Since quality meat is readily available in the region, it forms a large part of the daily diet. Much of the cuisine of this area is dependent of food preservation techniques, namely dehydration and canning. Dried foods include meat, chilies, squash, peas, corn, lentils, beans and dried fruit.

North Mexico is also the home of Old El Paso’s™ Restaurante Steak Carne Asada tacos. Carne Asada means ‘grilled meat’, and it’s the minimalism of the core citrus, salt and signature chargrilled flavours that makes this dish simply fantastic.
