These 5 colourful treats will brighten up your winter

Winter can be dreary – let’s face it, you’ve looked out the window only to see nothing but grey sky and pouring rain. But it doesn’t have to be this way this winter! We’ve got some bright ideas to add some of the cheer that summer left us to make your winter baking colourful!

Sprinkle it all over!

For a simple yet effective way to make your baking colourful, try covering your baked treat in icing, and sprinkling with hundreds and thousands, edible confetti shapes or silver sugar balls.

Top it up!

Pile on colourful lollies or chocolates for another simple and effective way to add baking cheer. You can also top up your cakes with fondant, which you can either make from scratch or buy ready-made from your supermarket.

Colours to food-dye for

Adding food dye (or an alternative such as vegetable dyes like beetroot and spinach dyes) is a no fuss way to truly lighten up your baking without adding extras. They’re great for multi-coloured layered vanilla cakes, or making icing colourful.

Colour is not just for the edible stuff...

You’ll be surprised at how much simple additions will add to your baking! Emphasise the colours in your baking with patterned or brightly-coloured serviettes, cupcake patties, plates or cutlery. If you love colour coordinating, now’s your chance!

Think outside the cake

Bunting and fairy lights are not just for get-togethers and parties! If you want to surprise the people you are baking for (or simply want to add some extra joie de vivre to your presentation), setting your baked goods on a table with a pretty tablecloth, against a wall of colourful bunting or frosted fairy lights will accentuate your brightly-coloured treats.

Now, stand back and admire your work of art; you did a great job!
